Liz (Elizabeth) Russell, who goes by her artist name “Miniscule Deviations”, is an artist from Portland, Oregon, who has resided and operated out of Innsbruck, Austria since 2017.

Her mediums of choice are fine line illustration, detail-rich lino printing—a medium that has become the centerpiece of her artistic practice since 2024—and occasional large-format street art. While these mediums remain separate in their techniques, the style and expression remain unified.

The use of these traditional techniques, especially lino printing, is a deliberate response to the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence and the commodification of art. Lino printing in particular creates space for unforeseen imperfections and aberrations, forcing her to confront and integrate these throughout every step of the laborious process.

Since early on, she has consistently explored the natural world as well as the slightly bizarre and fantastical in her practice, as seen in several of her series, embracing those things that make life ever so slightly off or strange. These oddities are embraced in her process, as she views imperfections as vital elements in what makes up the human experience. This is thusly reflected in her chosen artist name.

This exploration remains evident in her work, which does not strive to be strange for novelty’s sake, but seeks to explore what it consists of, why it should matter, and what this reflects about what humans label as bizarre.

Often through the lens of classical—sometimes long-forgotten—mythological works, and inspiration from our already strange natural world, these details are brought to the surface to be laid bare and observed as an interplay between beauty and fright.
