Liz (Elizabeth) Russell, who goes by her artist name “Miniscule Deviations”, is an artist from Portland, Oregon, who has resided and operated out of Innsbruck, Austria since 2017.

Her work bridges the natural world and the bizarre, exploring how folklore and imperfect human mythologies reshape our perception of the beautiful, the unsettling, and everything in between. Drawing from both classical and obscure myths, she visualizes these themes to test the boundaries of the familiar and the strange.

This conceptual approach finds its tactile parallel in the process of relief carving. Where drawing builds up the surface through intentional marks, carving relies on subtraction, revealing an image by removing excess material.

Just as myths evolve through endless retellings, the carved block takes on a life of its own; original intentions shift as intuition guides the blade and unexpected details emerge through the physical act of gouging.

Embracing this inherent unpredictability, her work reflects how both stories and physical materials are shaped by accident, time, and transformation.
